How to Remove Eyeliner

Sometimes when you're in a hurry with your eye makeup, it's your furniture and other furnishings that end up needing a makeover. Avoid all that ugliness with some helpful stain removal techniques.

The first step in removing makeup stains is to identify the stained material.

Below are the most common types of materials that can become makeup-stained, with steps on how to remove makeup from each:

  • Non-washable fibers such as Acetate, Carpet/Synthetic, Carpet/Wool, Fiberglass, Rayon, Silk Triacetate or Wool
  • Washable fibers such as Acrylic Fabric, Cotton, Linen, Modacrylic, Nylon, Olefin, Polyester or Spandex
  • Hard surfaces such as Acrylic Plastic, Alabaster, Asphalt Bamboo, Cane, Ceramic, Glass/Tile, Cork Enamel, Glass, Gold, Ivory, Jade, Linoleum, Marble, Paint/Flat, Paint/Gloss, Plexiglas, Polyurethane, Stainless Steel, Vinyl Clothing, Vinyl Tile or Vinyl Wallcovering
  • Stone surfaces such as Bluestone, Limestone, Masonry Tile, Sandstone, Slate or Terrazzo
  • Leather or Suede
  • Wood

Follow these steps to remove makeup stains from Acetate, Carpet/Synthetic, Carpet/Wool, Fiberglass, Rayon, Silk Triacetate, Wool:

  • Brush (the method of using a stiff-bristled brush to gently remove dried stains and spots) or blot up any excess, taking care not to spread the stain.
  • Flush (the method of applying stain remover to loosen staining materials and residue from stain removers) with a dry-cleaning solvent such as Afta Cleaning Fluid.
  • Apply a dry spotter to the stain and cover with an absorbent pad dampened with the dry spotter.
  • Check the stain every 5 minutes.
  • Before changing pads, press hard against the stain.
  • Continue the alternate soaking and pressing until no more stain is being removed.
  • Flush with one of the dry-cleaning solvents and allow to dry.
  • If any stain remains, flush it with water and apply a wet spotter with a few drops of ammonia. (Do not use ammonia on silk or wool.)
  • Cover with an absorbent pad dampened with the wet spotter.
  • Let it stand as long as any stain is being removed.
  • Change the pad as it picks up the stain.
  • Keep the stain and pad moist.
  • Flush well with water. Repeat if necessary; allow to dry.

Follow these steps to remove makeup stains from Acrylic Fabric, Cotton, Linen, Modacrylic, Nylon, Olefin, Polyester, Spandex:

  • Brush or blot away any excess, taking care not to spread the stain.
  • Flush with a dry-cleaning solvent such as Afta Cleaning Fluid.
  • Apply a dry spotter to the stain and cover with a cloth dampened with the dry spotter.
  • Check the stain often, tamping (the method of bringing a brush down with light strokes on stained durable fabrics and materials) before changing the pad.
  • Continue alternate soaking and tamping until no more stain is lifted.
  • Flush with one of the dry-cleaning solvents and allow to dry.
  • If any stain remains, try the same procedure of soaking and tamping, using a wet spotter and a few drops of ammonia.
  • When the stain is gone, be sure to flush the area with water to remove all traces of ammonia. Launder as soon as possible.

Follow these steps to remove makeup stains from Acrylic Plastic, Alabaster, Asphalt Bamboo, Cane, Ceramic, Glass/Tile, Cork Enamel, Glass, Gold, Ivory, Jade, Linoleum, Marble, Paint/Flat, Paint/Gloss, Plexiglas, Polyurethane, Stainless Steel, Vinyl Clothing, Vinyl Tile, Vinyl Wallcovering:

  • Wipe any spills or brush away any excess.
  • With a cloth or sponge dipped in warm sudsy water, wash the surface.
  • Rinse well with water and wipe dry with a clean cloth.

Follow these steps to remove makeup stains from Bluestone, Limestone, Masonry Tile, Sandstone, Slate, Terrazzo:

  • Wipe up excess.
  • Mix a solution of washing soda or detergent (not soap) and water.
  • Wash the stained area.
  • Rinse well with clear water and allow to dry.

Follow these steps to remove makeup stains from leather or suede:

  • Gently remove excess.
  • Mix a solution of mild soap in lukewarm water.
  • Swish to create a great volume of suds.
  • Apply only the foam with a sponge.
  • Wipe dry with a clean cloth.
  • If a greasy or oily stain remains, powder it with an absorbent such as corn meal.
  • Give it plenty of time to work.
  • Gently brush or shake the absorbent from the surface.
  • Repeat if necessary.
  • On leather only, follow with cleaners such as The Tannery or Fiebing's Saddle Soap to condition the leather.

Follow these steps to remove makeup stains from wood:

  • Mix dishwashing detergent in hot water and swish to make a great volume of suds.
  • Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply to the stain.
  • Rinse with clear water.
  • Wipe dry immediately with a soft cloth and polish or wax as usual.

How to Remove Eyeliner

Wearing elaborate eye looks is all fun and games until you get to that part of the day where you have to remove every bit of it. Makeup removal is not an easy task (nor is it fun either), especially after a long night when all you want to do is go to sleep. But that's a risk we don't want you to take — going to bed without taking your makeup off because it can cause extensive damage to your skin.

While foundation and lipsticks are easy to take off, eye makeup is particularly stubborn to get rid of. Girls who wear kohl or eyeliner on their waterline would know that the struggle is far too real. Buuut, instead of firmly scrubbing or rubbing your eyes to get rid of the eyeliner, go ahead and take a look at some effective methods we've listed down that will help you get rid of every last trace of eyeliner effectively — yes, promise!

  • Tip #01: Use a Q-tip
  • Tip #02: Don't use too much remover
  • Tip #03: Give makeup wipes a break
  • Tip #04: Always start by removing your eyeliner

Tip #01: Use a Q-tip

How to Remove Eyeliner

Simply dip a Q-tip in micellar water like the Pond's Vitamin Micellar Water D-Toxx Charcoal or oil-based makeup remover like the Lakme Absolute Bi-Phased Makeup Remover to get rid of the eyeliner with ease. Both products have the ability to break makeup particles so that they can be easily picked by the Q-tip; thereby preventing harsh rubbing that can damage the delicate skin around eyes.

Tip #02: Don't use too much remover

How to Remove Eyeliner

Even if you drew a thick line on the waterline, don't use too much makeup remover. You require very little product to reach tiny areas such as your tear ducts. Steer clear of any harsh cleansers that might cause irritation. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser like the Simple Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water.

Tip #03: Give makeup wipes a break

How to Remove Eyeliner

While makeup wipes can be great for on-the-go cleansing or when you're on vacation and can't be bothered to do the whole shebang, we suggest not using it to get rid of eyeliner from the waterline. No matter how soft the wipe claims to be, you won't be able to reach nooks and corners. And, even if you do use wipes, don't forget to follow it up with a gentle cleanser to thoroughly get rid makeup and oil from the skin.

Tip #04: Always start by removing your eyeliner

How to Remove Eyeliner

As a general rule of thumb, it is best to first get rid of eye makeup and then the rest of your face. This prevents the risk of transferring makeup from the face into your eyes and also picks off any makeup that may have spread outside the eyes. Start with the stubborn eyeliner on your waterline and then move on to your eyelids.

When eyeliner is applied correctly, it can really show off your eyes. But if you drop that eyeliner on your clothes, carpet or sofa, you'll be show off something else — an ugly stain!

Here with tips on on removing any and all errant eyeliner stains is Meg Roberts, cleaning expert and president of Molly Maid services.

How to remove eyeliner from clothing

Note: Roberts does not recommend to use this technique for silk or wool clothing.

  1. Dab the area with a stain remover.
  2. Allow it to soak into the stain for at least one minute.
  3. Blot — don't rub! — the eyeliner stain with a small amount of liquid laundry detergent and a clean cloth.
  4. Machine wash as usual and then air-dry.
  5. Make sure the stain is gone before machine drying because the heat will set any remaining stain.
  6. If the eye liner is still visible, mix 1 tablespoon ammonia in ½ cup warm water. Dip a white cleaning towel into the mixture.
  7. Blot the eyeliner stain with the towel until the area is saturated.
  8. Continue to rinse the towel and blot the area until the stain disappears
  9. Machine wash as usual. Make sure stain is removed before placing in the dryer.

How to remove eyeliner from upholstery

There are two different methods for getting the stain out of furniture, but make sure to check the care label on the item first.

Roberts shares Molly Maid's method for removing this stain:

  1. Mix a solution of 2 cups water and 1 tablespoon dish-washing soap.
  2. Sponge the spot with the solution using a clean white cloth.
  3. Absorb the excess liquid by blotting the area with a dry cloth.
  4. Repeat these steps until the stain is removed.
  5. To rinse the area, alternately sponge with water and blot with a clean towel until detergent is removed.
  6. Blot dry.

Jack White, vice-president of Rainbow International cleaning services, offers this solution:

  1. Using a pencil eraser, try to lightly erase away the eyeliner. Do not be aggressive or you could damage the fabric.
  2. If eyeliner mark remains, apply a dry solvent by using a white cotton towel and blotting.
  3. Remove solvent residue by dabbing area with a dampened white cloth, then blotting with a clean white towel to dry.

Cleopatra-inspired makeup and a black smoky eye is all fun and games until it comes to the part where you have to take it all off. Even as beauty editors, we can admit that makeup removal is a hassle and sometimes it's the last thing you want to do, especially after a long night out. Throw in a stubborn black eyeliner on your waterline, and you've got a recipe for spending way too long scrubbing your eyes until they're red or worse, giving up altogether (PSA don't sleep with makeup on, kids). Here, to shed light on the gentle way to remove eyeliner from your waterline are celebrity makeup artists Billie Gene and Jenna Kristina. Ahead, read on for their expert tips and tricks. Tip #1: Use a Q-tip "To remove black eyeliner from the waterline, I simply suggest using a Q-tip dipped in an oil or water-based makeup remover," says Gene. The idea here is that an oil-based remover can easily break down the eyeliner, making it a cinch to remove without harsh scrubbing. Tip #2: A Little Goes a Long Way "A common mistake people make when removing eyeliner from the waterline is applying too much remover to the Q-tip or eye area," says Gene. A little remover goes a long way when removing eyeliner in those hard-to-reach areas, especially your inner tear duct. Kristina says it's important to avoid harsh cleansers with acids and exfoliators when removing your eye makeup as doing so may cause further irritation. Tip #3: Liquid Removers and Cleansing Balms Are Your Best Friends In this case, you want to put the makeup wipes down and opt for a liquid makeup remover or cleansing balm. "I love both types of removers because they are super effective and are also extremely quick to use," says Gene. "Some of my favorites are the Lancôme Bi-Facial Double Action Eye Makeup Remover and the IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Makeup Cleansing Balm." Pro tip: "If you are using a balm, rub it all over your face and then use a super soft warm cloth to massage the product off. This is an amazing treatment for your skin but also helps to melt your makeup off," says Kristina.

How to Remove Eyeliner Tip #4: Always Remove Your Eyeliner First Because your waterline is one of the most tedious parts of your makeup removal, Gene recommends getting it out of the way first. "It makes the process so much easier because then you can immediately (and easily) wash the rest of your makeup off with your remover or face wash." How to Remove Tar From Fabric

Things You'll Need

  • Soft cloth or paper towel
  • Plastic knife or spoon
  • Liquid dish soap or laundry detergent
  • Clean toothbrush or nail brush
  • Laundry pre-treat stick or spray

You may think your makeup application skills are foolproof, but even the smallest slip of the hand can result in a big, brown or black blob on your pristine, white linen sheets or your favorite white blouse. Don't feel bad, makeup mishaps happen to everyone occasionally. Although waterproof eyeliner on white fabric may seem like the fabric is destined for the rag bag, you can remove the waterproof eyeliner and save your white fabric.

Read the care tag on the white fabric before attempting to remove the waterproof eyeliner. If the care tag indicates that the white fabric should be dry cleaned, take the fabric to a professional cleaner and don't attempt to remove the waterproof eyeliner by yourself.

Blot fresh waterproof eyeliner with a soft cloth or a paper towel. Blot gently, using a lifting motion. Don't rub, as rubbing can drive the eyeliner further into the fabric.

Use the tip of a plastic knife or spoon to scrape off as much eyeliner as possible. Scrape carefully at the edges of the eyeliner and be careful not to press the eyeliner into the fabric.

Place a few drops of liquid dish soap or laundry detergent and a drop of warm water directly on the eyeliner. Scrub the eyeliner stain with a clean toothbrush or nail brush, working in only one direction. Avoid scrubbing back and forth, which can damage the fabric and set in the eyeliner stain, making it more difficult to remove. Rinse the area with cool water.

Look carefully to determine whether you removed the eyeliner from the white fabric. If the stain remains, don't place the garment in the dryer, as the heat of the dryer will set the eyeliner into the white fabric.

Treat the eyeliner stain with a laundry pre-treat stick or spray if dish detergent or laundry detergent fails to remove the stain. Use the product as directed on the label.

Dry the white fabric only after you completely remove the waterproof eyeliner. Place the fabric in the clothes dryer or allow the fabric to hang dry, depending on the directions on the fabric care tag.

Well if you have a crappy eye make-up remover, nothing you do is going to work well.

Maybelline has a great cheap eye make-up remover (always get the waterproof remover even if you don't wear waterproof eye make-up. It comes off easier)

I like Clinique's Take the Day Off remover too. It works really quick and doesn't leave any oily residue.

Just put some on a flat cotton round and press it gently on your eye and hold for like, 30 seconds to let it soak in. Then gently rub it off. Works every time.

How to Remove Eyeliner

Liquid remover is good for water-based products, such as eyeshadow and foundation. Oil-based products are just too much work for these liquid removers.

What you need is an oil-based remover, like Vaseline. Dab it on your eyes and your makeup comes off in a snap.

Or you could use Pond's Cold Cream. Works a fabulous treat.

I got you, bby! If you love to wear your eyeliner as black as possible, and lay it on thick, these are some tips and tricks for you. This includes how to remove the heavy makeup.

Since the great Kat Von D obsessed phase of my life began in 2008, I started to wear my black eyeliner winged and thick. Kat was, and is, an inspirational figure to me.

Unfortunately, adopting her makeup style lead to some rookie mistakes when it came to my skin care. I ended up with styes and pimples pretty regularly because I wasn't taking care of my skin while wearing my eyeliner so heavy.

So, what did I do as I got older and learned to take care of my skin? I invested in makeup removal just as much as the makeup itself. I read once that Stevie Nicks never went to sleep without washing her makeup filled face (no matter how hard she partied), so surely I could take better care of my own skin too. If she can remove makeup regularly, so can I! Girl is in her 70's now and her skin is fantastic. Taking care of her skin had to be why!

When I invested in makeup removal and made time for makeup removal, I knew that I didn't want to just slap anything on my sensitive skin. I wanted to invest in skin care that was cruelty free, and clean. The answer I found for that was Burt's Bees. Here's a look at which of Burt's products I use regularly to help keep my skin clean when I remove makeup.

I do choose the sensitive and dry skin options when it comes to Burt's Bees, or any skin care product for that matter, because that's how I best describe my own skin.

Think about what your skin type is and invest from there!

I know how you fell. UGH! I am a hairstylist/make-up artist and i also know and dislike traditional makeup removers. My favorite trick for removing stubborn eyemakeup is baby oil. For eyeliner, soak a q-tip with babyoil. For more stubborn things like: a whole eye area, mascara, false lash glue, etc, put baby oil on cotton pad and remove. Either method, be sure to wash your face afterwards.

BONUS: baby oil isn't as drying to your gentle eye area as harsh removers! 🙂

How to Remove Eyeliner

Use a Qtip with makeup remover on it. Wash your face afterwards also, helps get the leftover makeup off. Its ok if not every single mark comes off, when i wear eyeliner usually a little is left over and it rubs off by itself within a couple hours.

ok i know you said NOT to say makeup remover but i have a kind that is natural and works really well. It's expensive, but worth it! All the other makeup removers I have used haven't worked but this one has! It is by clinique and underneath it it says NATURALLY gentle eye makeup remover. It is a lotion, not a liquid. Try it!

How to Remove Eyeliner

well i'm not sure about what foods would work well, but i know what helps me is to rub a little vaseline around my eye and wipe it off with a towel, it comes right off! i swear by it and it doesn't do any damage to your skin, and if there are still little bits left at your lash line just take a q-tip and rub the lash line gently and it should come right off. it's cheap and isn't a hassle at all. hope that helps!

Removing your magnetic eyeliner is no drama at all, we promise. Grab your MoxieLash Olive Oil infused Q-Tips and gently begin to remove your magnetic eyeliner by swiping along your upper lash-line. Use one side of your Q-Tip to get the bulk of your eyeliner off and the other side to clean any extra mess. We recommend using one Q-Tip per eye so that you can effectively remove your liner fast.

You can also use any oil based makeup remover to take off your magnetic eyeliner. Just simply remove it with a napkin or tissue that has your preferred makeup remover on it.

However, we created our Olive Oil infused Q-Tips to make life easier for you as we have with every single one of our products.

Here is a step-by-step guide to removing your MoxieLash magnetic eyeliner:

  1. Make sure that your MoxieLash magnetic eyelash is off of your lash line and stored in its proper container. This is really important; we don't want to see your favorite MoxieLash magnetic lashes get ruined or lost. You can make sure that they are safe by placing them next to the magnetic in the container and watching them click back into place.
  2. Take your MoxieLash Olive Oil infused Q-Tip and/or waterproof cosmetic removing makeup remover and swipe it along where the liner is.
  3. Use one Olive Oil infused Q-Tip per eye so that you remove all of the magnetic eyeliner. It's as simple and easy as that, we promise! No scrubbing, tugging, or harsh treatment of your delicate skin. We wanted to make the removal process as simple and drama free as possible.

I need help. Can you tell me how to remove your eyeliner other than make-up remover??

How to Remove Eyeliner

Without using makeup remover get a cotton ball and dip it in Vaseline. Then just rub off the eyeliner, it works great!

As per my experience I can say that you need a good cleansing milk like Garnier,Ayur etc to remove your eyeliner.First take 2 -3 drops of cleansing milk in a cotton ball, close your eyes and then rub the cotton ball over the eyeliner to remove it.

Hope this will help

How to Remove Eyeliner

You can use baby wipes or olive oil with a cotton ball. Both will do the trick and will remove it quickly. Hope I helped.

When i wear eye liner i usually just take a damp wash cloth with a little soap and run it along the edge of my eye. just be careful not to get too much soap on the cloth so it doesnt get in your eye and adgitate it.

How to Remove Eyeliner

i use the avon's moister effective eye remover lotion works wonders!

The other night I tried my new waterproof eyeliner, which is perfect for getting my watery hay-fever eyes through the summer season. However, being a person who favours sleep over removing make-up, I awoke the next morning with the blue lines still glued to my eyelids. Part of me was tempted to just leave them there and never have to apply eyeliner again in my life, but I really didn't fancy being the girl with the wonky eyeliner forever. So I decided to get rid. If only to stop people from thinking my eyes are shaped like broken biscuits.

Because I'm not a person who owns make-up remover, I made the decision to wash my waterproof friend off in the shower. I lazily rubbed at my eyes, convinced that I done enough to be make-up free. But I hadn't. In the mirror I could see the eyeliner was still there, this time in the form of faded ink blots. I looked like a psychiatrist's test tool. And that was after fifteen minutes of warm running water.

How to Remove EyelinerThis is actually a really good eyeliner. I'm just not equipped to deal with it…

So here's my guide for removing waterproof eyeliner. Here's a clue: you can't.

Tips for Defeating Terrifying Eye-Demons

  • Place your face in a bath full of water for 3000 years plus. Try not to drown.

Spend a large amount of time cutting onions. Hopefully, the eye make-up will get annoyed by the crying and leave your eyes for good.

Ask the NHS for surgery to remove part of your eyelid.

Actually, scratch that, ask the NHS for surgery to move ALL of your eyelid. It is the only way.

Speak to the eyeliner in a soothing voice to encourage it to move. Maybe play some calming ukulele songs.

Plead with the heavens for a miracle. Plead with the eyeliner for a miracle. Blackmail may be necessary.

Ring up your local council and tell them you have someone squatting on your property. Mention tax evasion and fraud and other illegal activity to make this effective.

Start drinking. You'll hopefully end up drunk enough to forget what your eyes are supposed to look like.

Give up. Stay inside until Halloween. Be a zombie. A really bad zombie. Or just go as a person with no skills in eyeliner removal. Now, that's scary.

I should probably buy some eye make-up remover at some point…

A one-stop knowledge shop for beauty

"This mascara is so difficult to remove! I scrubbed at it for like five minutes and it still didn't come off!"

"After 10 minutes I was finally able to scrub off most of my eyeliner, but there was still some left. I went to bed and it was still there in the morning, so I scrubbed my eyes some more."

"I had such a hard time removing my mascara! I scrubbed off like half my eyelashes!"

I really hope I'm not the only one who looks like they're having a stroke when they see or hear people typing or saying these kinds of things:

You can attribute this to either a blood clot in my brain or to shock and horror. Usually I try to avoid looking like an idiot on the internet, but this is for a good cause.

Your eye area is delicate. The skin is thinner than it is on the rest of your face. Scrubbing can result in lost lashes, wrinkles, and eye irritation. VERY BAD. DON'T DO IT. Use my method instead! I promise that it will remove your eye makeup without scrubbing! Cross my heart and hope to die.

You will need two things:

  1. Makeup remover (use anything that doesn't irritate your eyes; you can also use cold cream, cleansing lotion/balm, petroleum jelly [commonly known as Vaseline], or oils, such as mineral oil, olive oil, or coconut oil, but patch test to make sure it doesn't break you out or irritate your skin/eyes)
  2. Cotton balls or pads

The stars of my show: Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover and some cotton balls from CVS.

Follow this simple process:

Dry cotton ball (left) and cotton ball with remover (right). Trying to show about how much I use. The entire visible surface of the cotton ball on the right is covered with makeup remover.

  1. If you are using a makeup remover, you probably have to shake it to mix the two liquids. Get a good amount of makeup remover on your cotton ball/pad. Don't just get it in one spot; I like to cover the entire side in makeup remover. I prefer cotton balls because you can get more product on them without the liquid soaking through. If you're using petroleum jelly, cold cream, a cleansing lotion/balm, or coconut oil, which is solid at room temperature, you want to just apply it directly instead so that your body heat can melt it. Alternatively, if you choose to use one of those eye makeup remover pads, just take one of those out. In my experience, though, those pads don't tend to be quite wet enough (i.e. not enough remover).
  2. Put the cotton ball/pad directly onto your closed eyelid. If you are using coconut oil, cold cream, or a cleansing lotion/balm, you want to spread it out so it covers the entire area you want to clean (all over your eye area; keep your eyes closed) and just leave it sitting there. You can also just apply oils directly to your eyelids, but I prefer to use cotton balls so it's less messy.
  3. Hold it there for about 10 seconds. Removing eye makeup is not like erasing white boards (i.e. removers are not magic potions that instantly take off eye makeup). The remover needs some time to dissolve your eye makeup, particularly stubborn mascara.
  4. Wipe downward gently. DO NOT SCRUB AT YOUR DELICATE EYE AREA. Scrubbing can result in wrinkles, eye irritation, and lost lashes, as previously mentioned. Also, you don't want to feel any pulling or tugging. You want to be very, very gentle with your eye area.
  5. If there is still eye makeup remaining, hold the cotton ball/pad on your closed eyelid for about another 10 seconds, then wipe downward gently again. Repeat until your eye area is clean of any makeup. You may need another cotton ball/pad or to add more remover to your current cotton ball/pad for particularly stubborn eye makeup.
  6. You may have some mascara remaining on the bottoms of your lashes. You can place your cotton ball underneath them and swipe upward gently.
  7. If there is some oily residue, take a clean cotton ball/pad to (gently) wipe or dab off the residue. Alternatively, wash your face to get rid of the oily residue (you have to wash your face anyway to get the rest of your makeup off, right?).

If you find that this still isn't removing everything, you may consider switching removers. Some are more effective than others.

What if I get something in my eyes?

No big deal. Your vision might get a little blurry, your eyes may water (your eyes naturally do this to wash away anything that gets into them), or your eyes may even sting, but it will not harm your eyes. However, I always keep my eyes shut pretty tightly during eye makeup removal. Just because it's not harmful doesn't mean I want it to get into my eyes.

Wait, I can use oil to remove my makeup?

You sure can! But make sure that the oil(s) is/are organic, cold- or expeller- pressed, extra virgin (you don't want your oils to be even slightly slutty), and un-fragranced. Some people may experience irritation or breakouts, or be allergic to an oil, so be aware that it's not for everyone.

I hope this is helpful! Feel free to ask questions, comment, and/or recommend your favorite removers or other methods you like to use.

How to Remove Eyeliner

Everyone likes a fresh start. If you want to wake up with clean, glowing skin, then you absolutely must take off all your makeup. You're doing your skin the ultimate favor by taking off your makeup at night. Sleeping with your face makeup on can lead to dry skin, acne, and even wrinkles caused by collagen breakdown — and that's just face makeup. Leaving eye makeup on causes its own set of problems, including eye infections, eye irritation, styes, and broken eyelashes. Removing your makeup every night is a skin care necessity.

Read on for seven tips on how to remove makeup completely from makeup experts. We consulted with Laura Mercier, creator of Laura Mercier Cosmetics and celebrity makeup artist Maria Verel to find out how to take off makeup like a pro.

How to Remove Makeup

Your daily cleanser should be sufficient to take off foundation and blush. "Massage the cleanser over your face and let it sit for 15 seconds, and don't forget your hairline, under your chin, and around your ears. Then wipe with a wet, white cotton washcloth, so you can really see that all the makeup is gone. If your foundation is long- wearing or you use a face brush, you can go over your face with remover first," says Verel. Keep gently scrubbing until no more foundation or blush comes off on the washcloth.

"The process of taking off your makeup should be gentle and should never leave your skin dehydrated or irritated," says Mercier. "I like to use a cleansing oil, which won't dry out your face. Using your fingers, swipe a small amount of oil across your lids, eyebrows, and lips, and then lightly massage it all over your face. This will soften your skin and loosen the makeup, so you don't have to rub like crazy. Then take a flat, square cotton pad — I like these better than the balls, which can be rough — and pour a little cleansing oil on it. Go over the same spots again, being careful not to scrub back and forth. Just skim the surface in one direction to pull up the color."

You can also steam your face before washing. Fill up your sink or a bowl with hot water and hover your face over it for a minute or two. The steam will loosen up your pores and make it easier for the cleaner to penetrate the skin deeper to remove makeup and debris. This might have the extra time to steam your skin, but it's a good occasional option. You can even add a drop of lavender essential oil for extra soothing, spa vibes.

Mascara and liner are the hardest to get off, but you don't want to scrub — the skin around the eyes is sensitive. Cotton balls leave fibers behind, so use a cotton pad and either an oil-based (for waterproof products) or dual-phase (for everything else) remover specifically for the eyes. Pre-soaked pads are fine. (Verel recommends pre-moistened Ocusoft and Systane pads.) Close your eyes and hold them over your lids and lashes for about ten seconds to give the remover time to dissolve the product before wiping.

"When you wear waterproof mascara, swap the cleansing oil for a waterproof-eye-makeup remover. Otherwise, you'll have to rub so hard to loosen the color that your lashes will break. Soak a pad with remover, press down softly on the lashes for a few seconds so the formula soaks in, and then slowly move the pad across the eyes.

After you've removed your eye makeup, take another pass with a dry cotton pad to make sure you get off any last bits of product and the excess makeup remover, too. This final pass will prevent mascara circles in the morning and improve your makeup application the next day. No one likes to wake up with raccoon eyes.

A cotton pad soaked in liquid or cream makeup remover should take off most lipsticks. You need an oily formula only if the lipstick is long-wearing or intensely pigmented, however.

"I cringe when I see women using baby wipes to remove their makeup. Those do not get the job done, and when I tell women this, they say, "But baby skin is so sensitive, this must be good for my face." Well, a baby's butt isn't covered in makeup that requires special ingredients for proper removal," says Mercier.

What to Do After Cleansing Your Skin and Removing Makeup

Now that you've gently removed your makeup and cleansed your skin, you can follow up with any toner, moisturizer, or serums you like to use. When you wake up in the morning, you'll be ready to take on the day with squeaky clean skin. All your hard work the night before will pay off when you can jump straight to your sunscreen and day serums, rather than having to start by washing off last night's makeup.

That's right — you don't necessarily have to wash your face in the morning if you washed it the night before. Your skin is already clean at this point, and if you suffer from dry skin, washing it the morning can actually further strip the skin of moisture. You do need to always wash in the morning, however, are people with oily skin. People with oily skin should wash again in the morning to remove oil buildup from the night before

But whatever your skin type, washing at night is a must-do. Commit tips on how to remove makeup to memory and implement them into your daily routine. We'll all have nights we forget, but hopefully removing our makeup at night is the exception, not the rule!

How To Remove Makeup With Eyelash Extensions

How to Remove Eyeliner

I love having eyelash extensions. I don't get them all the time because after a while the upkeep gets a little too costly for my taste, but man oh man do I dig the convenience…and the waking up looking a little more pretty. That's nice too.

I wrote about my eyelash extensions before, and I did a comparison of my natural lashes before and after to show wether or not it damaged my lashes or made them fall out. You can read the HERE but spoiler alert, my lashes were fine.

I've been back on the eyelash extension bandwagon for a while because I've been doing a bit of travel the last few months. As a matter of fact by the time you read this I will probably be on the beach in Aruba, hay girl haaaay. There is no better time to have ash extensions than on vacation. Trust me. But this time around I've learned a thing or two about taking off your makeup with eyelash extensions that really cuts down on how much they shed between appointments.

The first thing you need is a Micellar water makeup remover. My favorite is Bioderma but a budget friendly dupe (that actually works just as well TBH) is the Garnier Micellar Cleanser.

It's oil free and super gentle, which is what you want for the extensions, but it is also capable of removing longwearing waterproof makeup.

How to Remove Eyeliner

Now as you can see I'm about to put the cleanser on a washcloth. No, it's not because I really love the challenge of getting makeup stains out of my laundry. Putting the cleanser on a cloth rather than a cotton pad is super helpful when you have lash extensions because it doesn't leave behind any lint. Personally I have a giant collection of cheap clothes that I use to wash my face just for this purpose so I'm not so worried about the stains.

I have lost many an extension trying to get the lint from a cotton pad out of my eyelashes. I'm just sayin.

How to Remove Eyeliner

Once I pour some of the cleanser onto the cloth I like to place it on my closed eyelid for a few moments and just let it sit. No rubby rubby, no swipey swipey. Just leave it there and let it do its thing.

Once you have held it on there for around 30 seconds to a minute you can gently wipe away the majority of what's on your lid, avoiding the immediate lash line area. Because for that we are going to get a bit more precise.

How to Remove Eyeliner How to Remove Eyeliner How to Remove Eyeliner

Grab a cotton swab and soak one end of it it the Micellar Water. Really make sure you get it soaked. Then gently rub away the remaining makeup that is close to your precious baby lash extensions. It shouldn't be too difficult to remove because you already loosened it up quite a bit by letting the cleansing water soak into it, but be gentle. It's better to go back over it a few times than to get rough and damage the base of your extensions.

If I have them on hand I like the precision tip cotton swabs because duh, they're more precise. But I've been using the regular ones and they work fine as well you just have to be slightly more careful.

How to Remove Eyeliner

Bing bang boom, your makeup is off and your extensions are still in good shape. When I took these photos I had my extensions on for nearly three weeks and this is how well they held up, which so really really impressive. The time prior to this set lasted nearly as well and that was through swimming and sweating and falling face first into the ocean off a paddle board…so I think I've nailed the process at this point.

Hope that helps if you have been having a hard time washing off your waterproof winged liner and smokey eyes and what have you without damaging your pretty extensions! I'm gonna go get ready to swim around looking like Beyonce with my fly ass lashes now.
